Blumio: Designing a Mobile MVP for a Continuous Blood Pressure Device

What is Blumio?

Blumio is a blood pressure cuff that uses radar technology to continuously read a user's blood pressure in a 24-hour period. The start-up is part of the San Francisco based hardware accelerator, Highway 1.

Problem

Blood pressure is not one number, it changes all the time. Blumio required a mobile interface MVP that displayed data collected from its cuff, in order to inform users about their blood pressure and assist them in connecting lifestyle choices and activities, with blood pressure readings

Team and Duration

I was part of a 2-person team and we had two-and-a-half weeks to deliver an MVP to be presented on Highway 1 Demo Day.

Goals for the MVP

1. Educate people on key metrics.

2. Provide data that is helpful and not confusing.

3. Show visualizations of blood pressure to give users actionable feedback.

4. Inform users about the meaning and importance of blood pressure readings.

User Research and Synthesis

We conducted stakeholder interviews and user interviews; did affinity mapping, concept mapping, system mapping, empathy mapping, journey mapping and persona synthesizing to gather insights from research.

Key Insights from User Research

1. People don't understand the connection between their lifestyle behaviors and blood pressure.

2. People distrust blood pressure readings, so context is important.

3. Understanding trends is a powerful way to diagnose and screen for high blood pressure.

4. There are reactive and proactive users of blood pressure devices.

5. High blood pressure is a silent killer, monitoring consistently is difficult.

Detailed Design for MVP

Due to time constraints, the MVP focused on finding a solution for all of Julia's needs and most of Eddie's needs. Therefore, the design solution answered the first three insights

1. People don't understand the connection between their lifestyle behaviors and blood pressure.

2. People distrust blood pressure readings, so context is important.

3. Understanding trends is a powerful way to diagnose and screen for high blood pressure.

Recommended Next Steps

The next steps for Blumio involve creating a design solution that answers the remaining needs of the second persona, Eddie and solving the last two insights of:

4. There are reactive and proactive users of blood pressure devices.

5. High blood pressure is a silent killer, monitoring consistently is difficult.

To further solidify Blumio as a partner in a user's health, we recommend creating a chatbot. The chatbot answers the problem of keeping reactive users like Eddie engaged. This would educate Eddie on how his real-time behaviors affect his blood pressure readings.

Continuous tracking with Blumio is a brand new idea. Users will benefit from being educated on proper usage through clear and concise on-boarding. It will be important for users to set clear blood pressure goals, track medication and customize reminder preferences to understand the value of continuous monitoring that focuses on trends and averages.
